Challenges in the growing complexity of the health care field not only concern health care professionals in terms of delivering adequate treatment to their patients, but also in terms of further enhancing and professionalizing methods of teaching. For this reason, experts are needed to design and assess curricula and improve learning environments for undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education students. In the context of exponentially growing medical knowledge it becomes even more relevant to have the expertise to teach this knowledge and to be able to optimize personal learning styles.
The Harvard Graduate School of Education offers a Special Studies Program, whereby participants learn general quantitative and qualitative methods as well as current trends and novel approaches in education. A wide range of courses can be selected by the program participants according to their individual focus of interest and specialization ranging from introductory courses in qualitative and quantitative research to the use of technology in education as well as principles of adult development or philosophy of education. Through cross-registration it is also possible to take courses at any other Harvard affiliated institution (e.g. Harvard Medical School, Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School) to further improve communication, management, or leadership skills. In some courses, students are encouraged to develop or bring their own projects which they can later apply to specific projects at their home institutions.

Duration: 1 academic year, 2 semesters (full-time), 2 academic years, 4 semesters (part-time), minimal requirement for successful completion of degree: 32 Credit Points (8 courses)
Schedule: full-time (minimum of 4 courses per semester) or part-time (minimum of 2 courses per semester) attendance, one academic year consists of: fall semester (August until December), winter term (January), spring semester (February until May).

This program can be used as an introduction to professional educational practice and will provide students with the necessary tools to design and assess teaching and learning in any given context as well as to connect educators from a large variety of backgrounds and nationalities.
