Gender has been an important topic in lots of scientific activities all over the world, including the fields of pharcodynamics and pharmacokinetics, where many differences between men and women were found. Using the keywords “sex, gender, male, female, pharcodynamics and pharmacokinetics” an internet-investigation shows that annual publication rate of original articles has increased steadily between 1975 and 2005 with totally about 3000 published articles so far.

In the past few years many universities around the world decided to adopt their curricula and implement Gender Mainstreaming in medical education, either in the core-curriculum or as en elective course. Since 2004 the Medical University of Vienna offers introductory courses in gender medicin. Hence, it is important to support this kind of activity with electronic learning facilities.

The objective of our project is to develop an e-learning concept with the topic Geschlechterspezifische Unterschiede in Pharmakodynamik und Pharmakokinetik on the basis of the free learning platform “Moodle”. This contribution to the new curriculum of the Medical University Vienna should encourage further interest of students in important gender aspects in pharmacology.
